Markis Ortiz-Harris Obituary, Death News –  Authorities have released new details surrounding the fatal shooting that took place Thursday at an Amazon fulfillment center in Gates. The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Markis Ortiz-Harris, a Rochester resident. According to police, Ortiz-Harris was sitting in his car outside the facility, waiting for his shift to begin, when he was shot by a suspect.

News10NBC’s Declan Stablow was on the scene in Gates speaking with local residents and witnesses to gather more insight into the tragic event. Although employees from the Amazon warehouse were reportedly unable to speak with media outlets, Amazon clarified that such restrictions are not part of their official policy.

One nearby resident, Charles Parsons, described what he witnessed during the incident. He recalled seeing a heavy police presence as law enforcement and emergency vehicles arrived at the fulfillment center. “I saw several police pull into the Amazon facility. I also heard sirens, seeing other EMS responders turn into the Amazon facility,” Parsons said.

Though Parsons first learned about the shooting through social media, he said the seriousness of the situation was obvious based on what he observed. “For several hours, I saw they were staging employees in a field across the street from Amazon, and they weren’t allowed into the facility, so that’s how I knew it was something serious,” he noted.

Parsons also voiced concern for the safety of the community, even though police described the shooting as a targeted act. “I just hope people would stop resorting to gun violence as a way to resolve their issues. There are more civil ways to act. This isn’t the Wild Wild West,” he said.

Police have emphasized that there is no evidence indicating the suspect was employed by Amazon. The shooter remains at large, and investigators are continuing their efforts to locate and apprehend the individual responsible.

Following the incident, Amazon has confirmed that operations at the facility have resumed. The shooting, though deemed an isolated event, has understandably raised concerns among employees and residents in the area.

Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to aid in the ongoing investigation. The identity of the suspect has not yet been released, and no arrests have been made at this time.
