William Davis Cause Of Death – A 79-year-old tourist who went missing on Mount Washington in New Hampshire was found dead after a three-day search. William Davis, a resident of Jacksonville, Florida, was discovered by search teams around 11 a.m. on Friday, according to officials with New Hampshire Fish and Game.

Davis and his wife had taken the Cog Railway up to the summit of Mount Washington on Wednesday. During their visit, the couple posed for a photo near the visitor center. At some point afterward, Davis walked off toward a nearby trail and was last seen around 3 p.m. Authorities emphasized that Davis was not planning to hike and had no gear or intention of venturing far from the summit area.

Lt. Mark Ober Jr. of Fish and Game said it remains unclear why Davis decided to leave the area and head onto the hiking trails. “He had no plans to hike, but for some unknown reason, he went off on one of the trails,” Ober explained.

After losing sight of her husband, Davis’ wife contacted New Hampshire State Parks seeking help. A staff member briefly spoke with Davis by phone. He indicated that he was lost off-trail and described his surroundings before the call ended, presumably due to his phone battery dying.

Search operations began Wednesday evening, involving approximately 50 patrol officers across the following days. As the search progressed, the weather became increasingly hazardous, especially between Thursday and early Friday, forcing temporary suspension of some search efforts.

On Friday, the search expanded with assistance from Blackhawk helicopters, more than 20 Fish and Game officers, and volunteers from various agencies. Davis’ body was ultimately located on the southeast side of the mountain summit. Officials believe he may have slipped and fallen down a steep and rocky slope. His remains were recovered and transported to the state medical examiner’s office for a full investigation into the cause of death.

Patrick Hummel, the park manager at Mount Washington, expressed deep condolences and noted the unusual nature of the incident. “This was a very intensive search, with many questions still unanswered,” Hummel said. “We may never fully understand Mr. Davis’ decisions or how he ended up on the eastern slope. The entire park team and community are mourning alongside his family.”

Authorities stressed that disappearances from the Mount Washington visitor center are extremely rare. They used this incident to remind visitors of the importance of remaining with their group, understanding weather risks, and being cautious when near trails, even during what seems like a casual visit.

The tragic outcome of Davis’ disappearance has left many saddened and searching for answers. While officials continue to investigate, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of mountainous terrain and the importance of safety, even during short sightseeing trips.
