According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), deputies were called to the scene around the 6800 block of Highway 58 near Wolfever Bridge following reports of a vehicle crash involving someone trapped inside. When officers arrived, they discovered the vehicle had left the roadway and submerged in the waters of Harrison Bay.
Upon arrival, four deputies quickly entered the water in an attempt to rescue the driver trapped inside the car. Despite their urgent efforts, they were unable to reach and save the driver.
Rescue divers were later brought in and were able to retrieve the body of the driver from the submerged vehicle. The victim was identified as 41-year-old Robert L. Lynn.
Hamilton County Sheriff Austin Garrett released a statement reflecting on the incident. He expressed his pride in the swift response and tireless work of local emergency personnel. Garrett praised the teamwork shown by his deputies and the multiple agencies that responded. He noted that although the initial effort was focused on saving a life, the situation tragically shifted to a recovery mission due to the passage of time.
Sheriff Garrett said, “Today I watched as my deputies, along with personnel from Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department, Dallas Bay Fire & Rescue, Hamilton County STARS, TWRA, Tennessee State Parks, and HCEMS, work feverishly to save lives, as they do every day. Sadly, time worked against us and their efforts would ultimately become a recovery operation. As Sheriff, to say I am proud of the incredible first responders in this county would be an understatement. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Mr. Lynn.”
In addition to HCSO deputies, the response effort included teams from the Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department, Dallas Bay Fire Department, Hamilton County Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS), Tennessee State Parks, the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA), and Hamilton County STARS. Their collaboration highlights the unified response to the emergency.
The precise cause of the crash is still under investigation. Authorities have not yet released any details regarding the circumstances that led to the vehicle leaving the road and entering the water.
