Kevin Cruickshank, May Kwok Obituary, Death: Driver crashes into food truck and bank a day after two hit at same NYC intersection.

Kevin Cruickshank, May Kwok Obituary, Death – On Sunday morning, a car crash at a busy Manhattan intersection resulted in injuries and significant damage, just one day after a deadly accident occurred at the same location. According to the NYPD, the crash happened around 3 a.m. at the intersection of Canal Street and Bowery, near the Manhattan Bridge entrance, a location known for heavy traffic and dangerous conditions.
The driver, a 25-year-old man, reportedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a food truck and the front of a TD Bank branch. The crash injured the 20-year-old food truck operator, who was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital. A 21-year-old female passenger in the car was also treated for minor injuries. Police confirmed that the driver stayed at the scene and was taken into custody.
This incident came less than 24 hours after another devastating collision at the exact same intersection. On Saturday, a Chevy Malibu came speeding off the Manhattan Bridge and struck two pedestrians — a man riding a bicycle and a woman sitting on a bench. Witnesses said the vehicle was moving at an estimated 70 miles per hour when it left the bridge, lost control, and hit the victims.
The victims of Saturday’s crash were identified as 55-year-old Kevin Cruickshank from Manhattan and 63-year-old May Kwok from Brooklyn. Both were killed on impact. The car then hit a parked NYPD van, which caused the vehicle to ricochet into a nearby jewelry store, adding to the destruction.
Following the Saturday crash, the area was left in chaos: a tree had been uprooted, the bench had been displaced, and personal belongings, including shoes, were scattered across the roadway. Police located and apprehended the driver and passenger — both women in their early 20s — about a block away from the scene after they initially fled on foot.
The back-to-back collisions have raised safety concerns among local residents and city officials. Community advocate Karlin Chan called for immediate changes to the intersection, urging the city to install Jersey barriers or another form of permanent protective infrastructure to prevent future tragedies. The stretch of Canal Street leading from the Manhattan Bridge has long been criticized for its dangerous layout and high-speed traffic, making it a frequent site of accidents.
While both crashes remain under investigation, authorities are continuing to gather information and evaluate possible causes, including vehicle speed and driver behavior. In the meantime, the community is left mourning the lives lost and calling for swift action to ensure such preventable incidents do not continue to happen at this dangerous intersection.
