Antonio Conrad Obituary, Death: Man fatally struck while helping push stalled car on I-471; 2 injured, police say

Antonio Conrad Obituary, Death – One person is dead and two others were injured following a crash early Sunday morning on the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge, according to Newport police. The incident occurred around 3:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 471. Authorities say a vehicle had broken down in the far right lane of the bridge. Another person stopped behind the disabled car to help push it out of the roadway.

While assisting with moving the vehicle, a third car approached and struck the back of the stalled vehicle. The force of the collision caused the person pushing the car to be thrown forward, pinned between the two vehicles.

Emergency responders transported the pedestrian and a passenger from the assisting vehicle to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The pedestrian, later identified as 36-year-old Antonio Conrad, died from his injuries. The Hamilton County Coroner confirmed his identity on Monday.

Police reported that the injured passenger sustained a spinal cord injury but no further details were given regarding their condition. The driver of the broken-down vehicle was also taken to a hospital, though the name of the facility was not disclosed. Police said the driver had only minor injuries.

The person driving the vehicle that caused the crash was not hurt in the collision, authorities said.

Due to the severity of the accident, law enforcement shut down several lanes on the bridge for several hours to conduct their investigation and clear the scene.

Newport police are still investigating what may have contributed to the crash. They have not ruled out the possibility of criminal charges as the investigation continues. Authorities are reviewing all factors, including visibility, speed, and driver behavior at the time of the collision.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by good Samaritans and pedestrians on highways, especially in low-visibility conditions or during overnight hours. Police urge drivers to remain cautious and alert at all times, particularly when approaching vehicles stopped on the roadway.

As the investigation progresses, officials are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information to come forward. Additional updates are expected as more facts are gathered and reviewed by investigators.

Meanwhile, the death of Antonio Conrad has left family and friends grieving the loss of a man who was simply trying to help someone in need. His death underscores the risks faced by those who stop to assist others on busy highways, and police continue to encourage drivers to take extra precautions when stranded or offering aid.
