MCHENRY COUNTY, Ill; Teen cyclist, 15, fatally struck in Crystal Lake hit-and-run

MCHENRY COUNTY, Ill. – Authorities in McHenry County are actively searching for a driver who fled the scene of a fatal crash that resulted in the death of a 15-year-old boy.

The tragic incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on July 2, when emergency crews responded to a report of a collision between a car and a bicycle. The crash took place on Terra Cotta Road, near Deering Oaks Lane, in an unincorporated area of Crystal Lake.

According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, two 15-year-olds were riding their bicycles southbound on Terra Cotta Road at the time of the crash. While riding, one of the teens was struck from behind by a vehicle. The impact left the young cyclist with critical injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators noted that the bicycle involved in the crash was equipped with a red taillight that was turned on at the time of the incident, suggesting the teen was following proper safety protocols. However, despite this, the driver failed to stop or offer assistance and instead drove away from the scene, prompting a hit-and-run investigation.

As of now, the identity of the teen who died has not been disclosed publicly, likely out of respect for the family and due to the ongoing investigation. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office has not released a description of the vehicle involved but continues to urge members of the public to come forward with any information that might help locate the driver responsible.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any knowledge of the incident to contact detectives. They hope that leads from the public or nearby surveillance footage could provide the necessary details to identify and locate the vehicle and its driver.

The sheriff’s office emphasized the seriousness of the situation and reiterated their commitment to bringing justice to the victim and his family. Hit-and-run incidents, especially those resulting in death, are treated as major crimes, and the responsible party could face serious legal consequences once apprehended.

This incident has shocked the local community, particularly because it involved teenagers engaged in an everyday activity like biking. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of driver attentiveness and accountability, especially when sharing the road with vulnerable users like bicyclists.

As the investigation continues, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office remains focused on gathering evidence and encouraging potential witnesses to assist in the case. They are determined to find the individual responsible for the fatal crash and ensure they are held accountable for their actions.
