Mario Vasquez, Asiel Mena-Echevarria Obituary, Death: Motorcyclist killed, another injured in fiery racing crash in Weston.

Mario Vasquez, Asiel Mena-Echevarria Obituary, Death – A high-speed motorcycle race on U.S. Highway 27 in Weston ended in tragedy Sunday afternoon, leaving one man dead and another critically injured, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. The crash occurred just after 4:30 p.m. in the 4400 block of U.S. 27. The two motorcyclists—63-year-old Mario Vasquez and 35-year-old Asiel Mena-Echevarria, both from Hialeah in Miami-Dade County—were reportedly racing northbound when their motorcycles collided. Authorities said the riders sideswiped each other, causing both bikes and their riders to crash and slide several hundred feet along the roadway.
Following the impact, Mena-Echevarria’s motorcycle caught fire in the center median, igniting a large patch of grass in the area. Emergency responders transported both men to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood with life-threatening injuries. Vasquez was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, while Mena-Echevarria remains in critical condition as of Monday afternoon.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the crash. No other vehicles were involved, and further details have not yet been released.
This fatal crash comes amid growing concern over illegal street racing in Florida. From 2018 through mid-2025, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has recorded over 13,600 citations related to street racing or spectating. The problem has escalated in recent years, with citations reaching a high of 3,057 in 2024 and more than 1,300 already issued in 2025.
In response to the increasing danger, Florida lawmakers have taken action. In May 2024, Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation to impose stricter penalties on those involved in street racing, including “takeovers” and stunt driving. The new law raised fines and, for repeat offenders, upgraded some charges from misdemeanors to felonies. This builds on prior legislation from 2022, reflecting the state’s ongoing efforts to curb dangerous driving behaviors.
Officials continue to stress the dangers of high-speed racing on public roads and urge motorists to drive responsibly. The investigation into Sunday’s crash is ongoing.
