When law enforcement and emergency services arrived, they encountered a chaotic and distressing scene, with people fleeing in different directions and several individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
According to Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore, emergency medical personnel pronounced a woman dead at the scene. She was later identified as 35-year-old Laporshia Janae Gray Cobb, a resident of Anderson. An autopsy confirmed that Cobb died from a gunshot wound to her abdomen, and her death has been officially classified as a homicide.
Cobb was among many people gathered at a large community event to commemorate Juneteenth, the national holiday recognizing the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Authorities believe that a dispute broke out during the gathering, which quickly escalated into gunfire.
In total, 10 people were injured as a result of the shooting. Two of those individuals sustained critical injuries and were transported to local hospitals—AnMed Health and Prisma Health—for urgent treatment. Seven other victims suffered less severe wounds to their arms or legs and were taken to AnMed for care. Many of the injured reportedly arrived at the hospital in privately owned vehicles rather than ambulances, adding to the sense of confusion in the aftermath.
Multiple agencies responded to the emergency, including the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Anderson Police Department, Medshore Ambulance Service, Anderson County Fire Department, South Carolina Highway Patrol, and Anderson County EMS. The Anderson County Office of the Coroner also arrived at the scene to assist in the investigation.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident to determine what sparked the altercation and to identify those responsible for the shooting. No suspects or arrests had been reported at the time of this writing. Officials are reviewing evidence from the scene, speaking to witnesses, and urging anyone with information to come forward.
