Stephen Newton, a deputy coroner for the Lake County Coroner’s Office, confirmed that the preliminary autopsy results revealed Ahern died from blunt force trauma.

The tragic incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, when Ahern was struck by a train on the Union Pacific North line at milepost 34.75. This location is situated between the Waukegan and North Chicago Metra stations, near Oakwood Cemetery. The collision prompted an immediate response, with inbound and outbound train services in the area halted as authorities investigated.

The disruption to train services lasted for several hours, but tracks were fully cleared and restored within three hours. Meg Thomas-Reile, a spokesperson for Metra, confirmed the details of the incident and the subsequent delays in a statement. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ahern’s death is ongoing as authorities continue to examine the events leading up to the tragic accident.
