David Benway-Fongemie Obituary, Death – Police have identified the Bedford, New Hampshire officer who was shot during a struggle early Saturday morning. The officer, 24-year-old David Benway-Fongemie, was injured while attempting to arrest a suspect at the Country Inn & Suites on South River Road.
The incident occurred around 12:53 a.m. on Saturday when Bedford police received a call about a suspicious person at the hotel. Upon arrival, two officers, including a K-9 officer, initiated an investigation. The suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Jared Masseur from Nashua, fled on foot as officers approached.
As officers attempted to take Masseur into custody, he resisted and fought back. During the ensuing struggle, Masseur reached for Officer Fongemie’s holster and tried to seize his service firearm. In the chaos, Fongemie’s gun discharged and struck him in the leg.
Fongemie was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment, where he was later released. He is now recovering at home. Fongemie had been hired by the Bedford Police Department on September 9, 2024, and his recovery is a positive sign after the violent confrontation.
Masseur faces several serious charges, including resisting arrest or detention, being a felon in possession of a dangerous weapon, attempting to take a firearm from a law enforcement officer, and second-degree assault. He is currently being held in custody without bail and is scheduled to appear for arraignment on Monday at Merrimack District Court.
