According to reports, Candanoza initiated the stop and soon called for backup. A violent struggle broke out between the officer and the suspect, during which Candanoza was shot. In response, several 9-1-1 calls were made to report an officer down. A radio transmission from a local resident also alerted authorities to the situation.

When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found Candanoza suffering from a gunshot wound. Immediate medical attention was provided, and the officer was rushed to the hospital. Despite all efforts, Candanoza succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities later revealed that the suspect had fled the scene of the shooting. A pursuit ensued, and the suspect was eventually apprehended after crashing his truck. The suspect’s identity has not been released, but law enforcement confirmed his arrest following the chase.

This incident marks the first time in over four decades that a Terrell police officer has died in the line of duty. The last officer to fall was Patrol Officer William Robert Stout, Jr., who was fatally shot in 1980.
