Fernando Alvarez Obituary, Death – The Topeka Police Department (TPD) has confirmed the identity of a pedestrian who was fatally struck in a crash early Sunday morning in east Topeka. The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Fernando Alvarez, a resident of Topeka. His tragic death marks the second fatal pedestrian incident in the area within the past month.

The crash occurred just after midnight on December 8, 2024, in the 2500 block of Southeast Adams. Officers responded to the scene after receiving reports of an injury crash involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, they found Alvarez, who had been struck by a vehicle traveling south. Despite efforts to assist him, Alvarez was pronounced dead at the scene. As a result of the ongoing investigation, the area was closed off to traffic for several hours.

This fatality follows a similar incident that took place in the same area on November 20, 2024, when 72-year-old Emmett Leatherwood, also of Topeka, was killed in a pedestrian crash. These two accidents highlight a concerning pattern of pedestrian fatalities in the area within a short span of time.
