Robert Martin Pope Obituary, Death – A 66-year-old man from Glen Burnie, Maryland, has been identified as the victim in a fatal pedestrian accident in La Plata. The incident occurred on December 6, 2024, around 8:18 p.m., along Crain Highway.
According to the La Plata Police Department, officers were en route to a welfare check at a restaurant in the 6500 block of Crain Highway when they came upon the scene of the accident. The pedestrian, later identified as Robert Martin Pope, had been struck by a vehicle while in the northbound left lane of the highway. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witness accounts suggest that Pope was in a crawling position on the shoulder and left lane of Crain Highway when the accident occurred. A 2021 Chrysler 300, traveling in the northbound left lane, struck the pedestrian. The driver of the vehicle stopped immediately and remained at the scene to cooperate with authorities.
The investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing. Authorities have not disclosed further details about why Pope was in the roadway.
