Steven P. Litten Obituary, Death – Former Gettysburg Middle School Principal Steven P. Litten, 69, has tragically passed away from injuries sustained in a four-vehicle crash on state Route 94 in Berwick Township, Adams County. The crash, which occurred last month, involved several vehicles and required emergency responders to cut people from the wreckage. Litten, who was a longtime educator, succumbed to his injuries on December 3 at Wellspan York Hospital due to blunt force trauma, according to York County Coroner Pamela Gay.
The incident took place on the evening of November 19 at around 5:39 p.m. when Litten’s vehicle was struck head-on by another car that crossed the center line near the intersection of Hershey Heights Road. The collision caused both Litten’s car and the other vehicle to lose control, striking two additional vehicles. Although five people were transported to the hospital, Litten’s injuries were considered the most severe and life-threatening.
The crash resulted in significant damage, with three of the involved vehicles being disabled and requiring towing. Emergency crews worked for several hours at the scene, and the surrounding roads were closed for about six hours before reopening to traffic.
Litten had retired from his position as principal of Gettysburg Middle School in 2012 after serving 16 years in the role. His retirement was prompted by an opportunity to purchase a Lawn Doctor franchise in Adams and Franklin counties, which he pursued as a second career. Prior to his tenure at Gettysburg, Litten, originally from York County, had moved back to the area from Missouri in 1996 to take the principal position. He had also previously served as an athletic director at Dover School District earlier in his career.
Litten’s death has left a profound impact on his community, with many remembering him for his leadership and contributions to education in the area. His career as a principal and his later transition to business reflect his dedication to serving the people of Adams County in various capacities.
